Mooi gesprek over het verse EU-personeel

De gechevronneerde BBC-man Andrew Neil legde de correspondente van France24, Bénédicte Paviot, een paar feiten voor waartegen zij niets, maar dan ook niets wist in te brengen, hoe goed ze het ook meent met de EU. En even later maakte Michael Portillo (ex-Lagerhuislid, nu journalist) het werkje mooi af.
Ik vraag me af of dergelijke onbarmhartige gesprekken ook bij ons op de buis kunnen, met ter vervanging van die arme Bénédicte misschien onze eigen EU-fan, professor dr. Hendrik Vos? Wat zou deze brave Hendrik aan Andrew en Michael geantwoord hebben? Zullen we het ooit te weten komen?

Andrew Neil: Ik begrijp nog altijd niet waarom u denkt dat de EU nu in veiligere, beter zelfs, in optimistischere handen is met een mislukte Duitse defensieminister, een mislukte Belgische eerste minister, een voormalige financiënminister veroordeeld voor schuldig verzuim in een euroschandaal dat over miljoenen pond ging, en een Spaanse politicus die stond te juichen bij de repressie in Catalonië. Waarom is Europa in goede handen bij zulke mensen?
Bénédicte Paviot: Wel, dat is een …een mening, en zoals u vast weet is er kritiek gekomen op Ursula von der Leyen.
Andrew Neil: Zij is de tweede meest …in de poll van Der Spiegel deze maand was zij de op één na minst populaire president …euh politica in Duitsland. Rond haar departement loopt een onderzoek naar corruptieschandalen en netelige defensiecontracten. De Spaanse politicus, de man die nu het buitenland doet voor de EU, is veroordeeld voor handel met voorkennis. Hoe kunnen deze lui, hoe kan Europa’s toekomst veilig in handen van zulke mensen gegeven worden?
Bénédicte Paviot: Ik denk dat het belangrijk is voor ogen te houden dat de defensieminister, die u een ‘mislukte defensieminister’ noemt…
Andrew Neil: Het waren de Duitsers die haar zo noemden.
Bénédicte Paviot: Wel, niet alle Duitsers.
Andrew Neil: De meeste Duitsers wel, inbegrepen het rapport van de Bundestag over het gebrek aan paraatheid van Duitsland. Zestig procent van hun vliegtuigen kunnen niet vliegen, en honderd procent van hun onderzeeërs kunnen niet ter zee. Ze hebben het Duitse leger naar een arctische NAVO-oefening gestuurd met bezemstelen voor geweren! En die vrouw is nu voorzitter van de Europese Commissie.

Michael Portillo: Laat me zeggen dat ik het met Andrew oneens ben. Ik wens Europa niet te zien bloeien want de richting die deze mensen het willen uitsturen, is die naar het Europees federalisme. Ik voel genoeg mee met mijn mede-Europeanen om te denken dat een federale Europese Staat niet het antwoord is, niet voor ons alleen, ook niet voor hen. Iets dat ondemocratisch is, is niet de oplossing voor Duitsland, of voor Frankrijk of Italië, of voor Griekenland. De Grieken weten al dat het voor hen geen antwoord is, want zij zijn door de EU geruïneerd, door het aandringen op het aanvaarden van de euro, waar zij totaal niet in aanmerking voor kwamen, de euro een puur politiek project zijnde. Omdat de EU graag de symbolen van een eenheidsstaat wilde creëren, ontwierpen ze de eenheidsmunt, ontwierpen ze een vlag en ontwierpen ze een nationale hymne, en daarom was het gerechtvaardigd daar geen respect voor te betonen. Zulke dingen doen is verkeerd, want die dingen sturen ons een ondemocratische richting uit…
Bénédicte Paviot: Dat is echt respectloos… een theatertruc.
Michael Portillo: …en daarom kan de aanstelling van lui die ongevoelig zijn voor de Europese bevolking …meen ik in zekere zin een goede zaak zijn, want de revolte tegen deze wereldvreemde elite zal aanhouden.

Andrew Neil: I still don’t understand why you think the EU is now in safer, even better, optimistic hands, with a failed German defence minister, a failed Belgian prime minister, a former finance minister found guilty of negligence in a multimillion pound euro scandal, and a Spanish politician who’s been a cheerleader for repression in Catalonia. Why is Europe in good hands with people like that?
Bénédicte Paviot: Well, the, that is a …an opinion, and certainly as you know, Ursula von der Leyen has been criticised.
Andrew Neil: She’s the second most… in the Der Spiegel poll last month, she was the second most unpopular president, um …politician in Germany. Her department has been under investigation for corruption scandals and dodgy defence contracts, the Spanish politician who is now the EU’s foreign policy man, was done for insider trading. How can these people, how can Europe’s future be safe in these people’s hands?
Bénédicte Paviot: I think that the important thing to remember is that the ...um defence secretary that you are calling a 'failed German defence secretary'…
Andrew Neil: It was the Germans who called her that.
Bénédicte Paviot: Well, not all Germans.
Andrew Neil: Most Germans do, including the Bundestag report on Germany’s unpreparedness. Sixty percent of their planes can’t fly, a hundred percent of their submarines can’t take to the sea. They sent the German army into the arctic Nato exercise with broomsticks for guns! That’s the woman who is now president of the European Commission.

Michael Portillo: Let me say that I disagree with Andrew: I don’t want Europe to prosper because the direction in which these people want to lead it is towards European federalism. I have enough feeling for my fellow Europeans to think that a federal state of Europe is not the answer, not only for us, but not for them. Something which is nondemocratic is not the answer for Germany or for France or for Italy, or for Greece. The Greeks already know it’s not the answer for them, because they have been ruined by the European Union, by the insistence on creating a euro for which they were totally unsuitable. The euro being an entirely political project. Because the European Union wanted to create the symbols of a single state, so they created single currency, they created a flag, and they created an anthem, which is why it was right to show disrespect for it. Because these things are wrong things to do, because they take us in a nondemocratic direction…
Bénédicte Paviot: That is just disrespectful… it’s a gimmick.
Michael Portillo: …and therefore the appointment of people who have no sensitivity for the European population, I think in a way may be a good thing because the revolt against this out of touch elite will continue.
